Walden Here: Urban Field Notes

Only that day dawns to which we are awake.
- Henry David Thoreau

In our fast-paced contemporary lives many of us don’t think about nature and natural processes. This is reflected in how we treat the planet and ourselves. Through careful attention to our natural surroundings and our own inner landscape, we can learn to take better care of both.

Inspired by the writings of author Henry David Thoreau, this evolving installation and related activities reflected the artist’s time spent outdoors in downtown Long Beach, California. Over the course of the exhibition, the artist paid careful attention to aspects of the natural world in the area surrounding the gallery and throughout downtown; it was a sensory study of the intersection of nature and human-made phenomena. All visitors were invited to do the same and join the artist for dialogue and participatory experiences.
