Shelter
This installation was made as a context-specific, site-responsive, participatory work, made specifically for nomad, an event produced by the Torrance Art Museum. The event took place in an empty 5-story building and was the first large-scale, pop-up art event in Southern California after the pandemic lockdown of 2020, 2021. .
This project reflects —in an abstract way— on the past year and a half, and the humble tenacity required to keep going.
Simplicity has been an ally.
Meditation has been helpful.
My small bedroom has been a quiet refuge.
Given the scope and intensity of the Nomad exhibition, I envisioned this installation as a resting place, a place to take a break, to enjoy the afternoon light, to meditate.
For meditators, following the breath is a practice used to gain calm and focus.
With all we’ve been through in the past year and a half, we can no longer think of breath as a “given.”
Today, we are breathing.
