Who is She?
a study in likeness

This was a project for an exhibition of artists' self-portraits. The show took place at Utopia Restaurant, so I wanted to offer something that people who were waiting for a table could participate in. This is the statement about the project:

approximations language can add specificity or put distance between the actual experience of someone and the words used to describe her.

interconnectedness people--loved ones, friends, and strangers--play an important role in our discovery and understanding of who we are. In making a self-portrait, I want to consider this.

words In the spirit of the self-portrait show, I asked several people for words they would choose if they were going to help someone make a visual likeness of me.

exchange From late May to mid-June, 2014, I will make images related to the words I have collected and bring them here, to Utopia.

I invite you to also make a likeness--however you interpret this--on the reverse of this card, one that is inspired by the words below (randomly selected from the words I gathered). It can be as abstract, realistic, playful, simple, or complex as you'd like. Pencils are provided, but feel free to use any medium you like.

If you choose to, you are welcome to leave the image you've made in exchange for one of the images I've made. If you decide to do this, please sign your work...
